Transporting agricultural machinery safely: what you need to know
At first glance, transporting a used agricultural machine looks simple: load it on a lowbed, strap it down, done. In practice every detail decides whether the machine arrives undamaged.
The three most common causes of transport damage
From our experience with over 3,500 transports a year, damage cases boil down to three causes: incorrect load-securing, underestimated dimensions, and lack of advance coordination about the pickup location.
Load-securing: straps alone aren't enough
A tractor with 3.5 tons of unladen weight needs at least four certified lashing straps plus wheel chocks and safety loops. Securing must comply with DIN EN 12195.
Over-height and over-width: the permits
Up to 4.0 m height and 3.0 m width are allowed in Germany without special permit. Beyond that you need a special permit under § 29 StVO — lead time: at least one week.
Our recommendation
Take ten minutes for a briefing before pickup. Send us photos of both sides of the machine, give exact dimensions. This prevents 90 % of all problems.
